I want to leave this town
No you don't
I'm leaving here tomorrow
I want to see you again
No you don't
Well, I guess I'll see you soon
I want to write your name
in a script that can only connote sorrow
To read to myself on any given drunken afternoon
Down in West Memphis
You, the three, and me
Made our way through the leaves
To drink to the bowery
And though we're only human
with regrets that we surely hold up high
You must believe our bated breath
When we tell you that you're looking for the wrong guy
And if I'm not here when you wake in the morning
Listen to your reflection when she says you're not at fault
Because like my mind my legs must constantly be wandering
Until my vices bring my heart to a screeching halt
When the Winter feels like Summer
I must admit that I never seem to know
If I should take my blues and retire back to my slumber
Or if I should go outside and take off all of my clothes
And if I'm not here when you wake in the morning
Listen to your reflection when she says you're not at fault
Because like my mind my legs must constantly be wandering
Until my vices bring my heart to a screeching halt
LIke the lonely high diver
Up on the board terrified of heights and water
I know that I could finally have some closure
If I would swallow my pride and quit trying to keep composure
And if I'm not here when you wake in the morning
Listen to your reflection when she says it won't be long
Until I come back on my knees dirty and whining
And for the very first time I hear you say
Where have you gone?

Saturday Night
02:43
|

The Capital City is quiet
At least for a Saturday Night
And an empty California King sized bed
Will make you appreciate daylight
Lately I've been drinking
More liquor than my liver suggests
But I'm bigger and I am stronger
So I assume I know best
If you're ready to reveal all your secrets
Well honey all I've got is time
But I'm not sure if I'm quite ready yet
to reveal all of mine
So honey stick around
The Capital City is drowning
And I'm trying to find high ground
And If this flood swallows my car whole
I can still walk the fuck out of town
I will lead you with a glint in my eye
I mean a guilty grin on my lips
Because even though these hands may not be responsible
This heart could sure benefit from it
If you're ready to reveal all your secrets
Well honey all I've got is time
But I'm not sure if I'm quite ready yet
to reveal all of mine
So honey stick around
The Capital City is quiet
At least for a Saturday Night

Bourbon
Won't You Drown Me Tonight?
Seep through
My window just before sunlight
Stare through
My bloodshot eyes
And assume
There's something else inside
Bourbon
Won't you keep your voice down
As our tires
Tread the vomit soaked ground
Together
We'll dare the sun to shine
Adder-
All the time
Bourbon
Won't you drown me tonight?
Seep through
My window just before sunlight
Together
We'll dare the sun to shine
Adder-
All the time
I'm not giving in tonight

Old Hollywood

You don't look the same as the last time I saw you
But that don't mean you don't look good
I'm just wondering how they're treating you
Down in Old Hollywood
I used to go there when I was
Still young enough to find it funny
When my mother would dress her wounds
And say "Honey, I'm just clumsy"
Down there they've got slip sliding stair cases
And a hefty supply of grimacing faces
That will watch you as you ride away
Hoping for a better day
Tomorrow
I met a man there named Mr. Clean
Said he'd fix any mess for you
Imagine the surprise in my nine year old eyes
Seeing grenades and combat boots
In his garage as he said
"No I ain't got no money to spare
but I've got a heavy fist
and man that's all you need to get around here"
Down there they've got slip sliding stair cases
And a hefty supply of grimacing faces
That will watch you as you ride away
Hoping for a better day
Tomorrow
Guru speed doctors were always willing
To make house calls
We'd watch the transformation
And then try to walk it off
Money taken was always
considered money earned
And if this city taught me anything
Well, I guess that's what I learned
Down there they've got slip sliding stair cases
And a hefty supply of grimacing faces
That will watch you as you ride away
Hoping for a better day
Tomorrow
You don't look the same as the last time I saw you
But that don't mean you don't look good
I'm just wondering how they're treating you
Down in Old Hollywood

I hadn't played C enough
So when I woke up this morning I started strumming
and I was tired of writing love songs
So I thought I'd just say "fuck you," at least for today
Ever since August
I've been trying to decide
If that's death or my shadow over my shoulder
And of the two which is more on my side
Lady Death won't you let me go?
Release this grip you've got on me
I can't quit thinking about you
And I don't know if I can go on like this
God, the author, and I
All killed each other, I think it was just last night
After the standoff
Became a Mexican gunfight
And in those extended closeups
We could see the fear in each others eyes
And as we all collapsed
We could hear the relief in the sighs (of the onlookers)
Lady Death won't you let me know
Why you're always taunting me?
After much deliberation
I know I'm not the one for you
Down by the river
Where the Christians bathe their young
I dreamt I saw my lover
Using The grey stones to sharpen her tongue
Down where I sat smoking
Listening to the musings of the Midtown Queen
He said "All true love moves to fast"
"Yes," I added "it burns out quickly and it rarely lasts"
Lady Death won't you let me go?
Release this grip you've got on me
I can't quit thinking about you
And I don't think I can go on like this
Lady Death won't you let me go?
You've been weighing on my mind
And yes my darling I know
You'll be the only one to outlive me and that's fine
